Sr Occupational Hygienist

 

Overview

Are you an occupational hygienist with at least six years of industry related experience? Do you want to advise stakeholders, utilizing your occupational hygiene expertise, to help employers prevent occupational illness, disease, and disability? If so, we want to hear from you.

WorkSafeBC’s OHS Technical Advisory Services within the Prevention Practice, Quality & Engineering department is seeking a knowledgeable and dedicated senior occupational hygienist, to lead and participate in issues related to occupational hygiene management processes and strategies. This includes providing technical support to internal and external stakeholders, including a team of occupational hygiene officers and other departments in helping us reduce risk and keep workplaces healthy and safe through education, consultation, and enforcement.

What you'll do

As a Senior Occupational Hygienist you will:

  • Promote consistent application of regulatory requirements pertaining to occupational hygiene and health topics and act as a technical resource on complex issues.
  • Lead and/or participate in issue management processes specific to occupational hygiene and health issues.
  • Research complex occupational hygiene and health issues and recommend solutions or strategies for effective and practical enforcement and efficient use of occupational hygiene requirements in various focus sectors.
  • Assist the Manager, OHS Technical Advisory Services in the planning, implementation and on-going maintenance of a comprehensive occupational disease prevention plan of which an occupational exposure database is a critical component.
  • Support the activities of prevention officers and other work groups, including the development and delivery of training curriculum for a variety of occupational hygiene topics.
  • Coordinate WHMIS plans and activities in accordance with both divisional plans and Inter-jurisdictional memoranda of understanding and policies.  Provide technical direction to prevention officers engaged in both provincial and federal WHMIS activities.
  • Consistently model the appropriate level of organizational behaviours expected of all WorkSafeBC employees: responsive, respectful, fair, collaborative, accountable, and forward thinking.

We’re looking for someone who can:

  • Provide occupational hygiene and health expertise and guidance to WorkSafeBC staff and stakeholders
  • Use critical thinking skills to analyze and evaluate unique workplace hygiene and health issues and identify effective controls
  • Develop strategies and solutions to address complex industry issues and initiatives in order to reduce risk and keep workplaces healthy and safe
  • Make and enforce timely decisions independently and objectively, using sound judgment and technical knowledge
  • Professionally deal with emergencies and sensitive situations
  • Travel to locations in BC and stay overnight as required

Your background and experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in science or engineering and a minimum of six years (real-time) directly related experience
  • A professional designation in good standing as a Certified Industrial Hygienist through the Board of Global EHS Credentialing or a Registered Occupational Hygienist through the Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygienists.

Salary: $53.08 - $68.61/hourly
