The Actuarial Services department of WorkSafeBC is looking for an Actuarial Co-op student to join our team to help us strive towards our vision.

The co-op student will assist the Actuarial Services department in a variety of functions including setting of assessment rates, liability calculations, actuarial gain and loss analysis of financial results, research studies and responding to requests for data analysis and interpretation from other departments.

This is an 8-month temporary opportunity starting in May 2026.

Where you’ll work

At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines working remotely, and in our offices based on the operational needs of the position.

In this role you will be working 3 days per week from our Richmond, BC office.

What you'll do

On Day 1 in this role, you will get a chance to meet your manager and get acquainted with your team. You will spend time setting up administrative and technological essentials, and completing onboarding tasks, including security and payroll setup.

During your first week you will engage in a comprehensive onboarding program designed to equip you for success. You will be partnering and meeting with your manager to discuss your goals and align them with the team’s vision. Additionally, you will learn how our department contributes to the overall business strategy and supports the organization’s mandate. You will also work through the onboarding program alongside your supervisor for added guidance and support. 

This role is ideal for an individual who is eager to step beyond their comfort zone. We are looking for someone with a detective mindset, strong motivation, and a passion for innovation. The right candidate will possess analytical and critical thinking skills, enabling them to propose ideas that enhance various processes and initiatives, as well as to explore new approaches to work within the department.

Your daily responsibilities may include:

  • Utilize database query tools (SQL and MS Access) to extract data from large corporate databases
  • Analyze data, summarize results, and present and discuss findings for further analysis
  • Document findings and solutions
  • Communicate with stakeholders to clarify business requirements
  • Utilize your technical skills to produce answers to business questions
  • Perform other ad hoc tasks as required

  • Demonstrate teamwork and organization skills, and is detail-oriented
  • Be curious, receptive to learning and willing to ask questions

Your background and experience

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in Actuarial Sciences, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related area.
  • Enrolled in 3rd year or higher of your academic program.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Familiar with database query tools such as SQL or MS Access would be an asset.
  • Previous work experience and completion of some actuarial exams would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of Python and/or machine learning would be an asset.

Before we can finalize any offer of employment, you must:

  • Confirm you’re legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Confirm you’re a registered student at a post-secondary institution and is participating in a work integrated learning program
  • Consent to a criminal record check and successfully meet the criminal record check clearance
