Associate General Counsel

Overview

WorkSafeBC is currently seeking a collaborative and strategic legal leader to join our organization as Associate General Counsel. This opportunity arises due to an internal promotion which reflects on our commitment to career development and leadership growth.

Reporting to the Head of Law and Policy and General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel will lead a talented legal team of approximately 35 professionals and oversee a wide-ranging portfolio of legal services. This is a key leadership role that supports our operations by providing high-level legal advice in areas such as business law, statutory interpretation, and governance to senior leaders across the organization.

We’re seeking a strategic legal leader with strong business law expertise and experience managing legal teams in complex environments. The ideal candidate brings sound judgment, a collaborative approach, and the ability to align legal services with organizational priorities. Experience within the public sector, or with statutory frameworks such as the Workers Compensation Act, is an asset. We're looking for someone who can build trust with senior leadership, mentor and develop a high-performing team, and contribute to a legal function that is responsive, solutions-focused, and grounded in public service values.

How you’ll make a difference: You’ll ensure WorkSafeBC is serving stakeholders across B.C. effectively.

Where you’ll work

At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines working remotely, and in our offices based on the operational needs of the position.

In this role, you will work primarily from our Richmond Office with some flexibility to work from your home in B.C.

What you'll do

  • Provide strategic, business-focused legal advice to support decision-making across a complex organization.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a large and diverse legal team, fostering both legal expertise and business acumen.
  • Build strong, trust-based relationships with senior leadership, earning credibility as a key advisor.
  • Navigate and provide guidance on legal matters related to the administration of the Workers Compensation Act.
  • Apply sound judgment and a solutions-oriented mindset to complex legal and organizational challenges.
  • Collaborate across departments and with external stakeholders to support organizational goals and compliance.
  • Bring an understanding of the broader public sector and its legal, policy, and governance environment.
  • Champion a culture of excellence, inclusion, and continuous improvement within the legal team and beyond.

Is this a good fit for you?

We’re looking for a solicitor with experience in one or more of procurement law, commercial services contracts, workplace services contracts, privacy law, administrative law, ethics, corporate governance and statutory interpretation who can:

  • Lead and inspire a high-performing legal team, supporting professional development and fostering a culture of collaboration and accountability.
  • Build trust and credibility with senior leadership and stakeholders across the organization.
  • Demonstrate excellent judgment and navigate complex legal and governance issues with confidence and integrity.
  • Apply a deep understanding of statutory frameworks such as the Workers Compensation Act and public sector governance.
  • Think strategically while managing day-to-day legal operations effectively and efficiently.
  • Work across disciplines and departments to drive alignment between legal services and organizational priorities.
  • Engage respectfully and effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including those from diverse backgrounds and sectors.
  • Consistently model the appropriate level of organizational behaviours expected of all WorkSafeBC employees: responsive, respectful, fair, collaborative, accountable, and forward thinking.
